Relationship vs. Marriage

Here's a tongue-in-cheek look at some humorous differences
between being in a committed relationship and being married.

1. "I have to live with this for the rest of my life."

Relationship: If your partner says something or does something
that really bugs you, you forgive and forget fairly easily.
After all this is the perfect relationship and you will not let
such a little thing spoil it.

Marriage: When your partner says or does something that really
bugs you, you think, "Here is one more thing I will have to
always live with." You add it to the list already running in
your head.

2. "Who are you?"

Relationship: After a while, you get to know your partner well.
Many times you know what he or she is going to say or do.

Marriage: Your partner occasionally becomes someone else. Words
come out of his or her mouth that clearly belong to his mother,
father, or another questionable relative. As an added bonus,
you get the gestures and facial expressions, too.

3. "You used to be cute, but now you have to change."

Relationship: You can accept many differences and idiosyncrasies
about your partner. You find some of them cute and endearing.

Marriage: Now that you have to live with the person for the rest
of your life, the differences and idiosyncrasies are no longer so
very cute. Now they are "need to change now" projects.

4. "I am married?"

Relationship: When you are in a relationship and people say
"your wife" or "your husband" when referring to your
significant other, you promptly correct them.

Marriage: People say "your wife" or "your husband," and you
have two responses. The first is "That's right, my honey." The
second is "For the rest of my life!" This thought sometimes
evokes an almost-uncontrollable urge to run away very fast.

5. "Congratulations, but it's all downhill from here."

Relationship: If you have been together for a while, people are
likely already asking you when you will get married. They want
you to experience this next great stage in your life.

Now that you are married, people will ask you when you will have
children. If you already have children, people will ask you when
you will have more. Then, regardless of what is next, they will
tell you it's all downhill from here.
